| This is an exciting week as more than 22,000 young people go back to school in New Haven. Coming off of a very successful 2007-2008 school year with a record-breaking graduating class of more than 1,000 and impressive CMT and CAPT scores, we’re looking forward to going above and beyond in this new academic year. Thursday, when our schools open their doors to students and families, we will be celebrating the grand opening of two state-of-the-art facilities: the Columbus Family Academy and the Augusta Lewis Troup School. Our morning will begin on Thursday with a procession into the Troup School at 8:35 a.m. led by the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard featuring our very own, Captain Bryan Kearney, of the New Haven Police Department, singing the Star Spangled Banner. A celebration at the Columbus School will follow at 10 a.m. as students enjoy an exciting rally to celebrate their brand new school in the heart of the Fair Haven community. At the Columbus celebration, students will accept donations from two community groups and businesses of supplies for their building. Unveiling of Police Memorial Since 1855, 19 New Haven Police Officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. On Wednesday, the City will honor these 19 individuals and their families as an official Police Memorial is unveiled at the Department of Police Services, 1 Union Avenue. The memorial contains names, photographs and badges of these officers and recognizes them for making the ultimate sacrifice in their journey to protect the residents of the City. The unveiling ceremony will take place Wednesday, September 3rd at 11:15 a.m. in the main lobby area of Police Headquarters. Construction Workforce Appreciation Day On the heels of Labor Day, the community and media are encouraged to join the City of New Haven and New Haven Public Schools in honoring the State of Connecticut Building Trades, its members, and construction workers who have dedicated their energy and talents toward the construction of nearly 30 schools and related projects under the Citywide School Construction Program. This event will take place at Troup School, a newly renovated building that will open to students the day following this event. Troup is named for Mrs. Augusta Lewis Troup who was a pioneer for rights in the workplace. This event is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3rd.
